Keeping Pets Safe During a Snowstorm and Snow Emergency
Please be advised, I have declared a Snow Emergency in Media Borough.
Snowstorms can be exciting for people, but they can be dangerous for pets if proper precautions aren’t taken. Cold temperatures, ice, and snow chemicals can all put animals at risk, especially during extended storms or emergencies.
Whenever possible, pets should stay indoors. If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them. The ASPCA warns that pets left outside in freezing conditions can suffer from hypothermia or frostbite, and cars can become dangerously cold just as quickly as they can overheat in summer. Keeping pets inside also helps reduce exposure to toxic antifreeze, salt, and de-icing chemicals that can stick to their paws and fur.
When pets do need to go outside, even briefly, it’s important to protect them from the cold. Petco notes that short-haired dogs, smaller breeds, older pets, and those with less body fat may need a coat or sweater to help retain body heat. Watch for shivering or hesitation, which are signs your pet is uncomfortable and should come back inside.
Paw care is especially important in snowy conditions. Ice, salt, and chemicals can cause irritation or burns. The ASPCA recommends wiping paws and bellies after walks and checking for cracks or redness between toes. Booties or a pet-safe paw balm can also help protect sensitive pads.
Inside the home, make sure pets have a warm, draft-free place to rest. Extra blankets and elevated bedding can help keep them comfortable, especially during power outages or extended cold snaps. Fresh water is also essential, as pets can become dehydrated even in winter.
Snow can make familiar places unrecognizable, so pets should always be kept on a leash and wear identification tags. Deep snow and strong winds can cause pets to lose their sense of direction quickly.
With a little planning and extra care, you can help ensure your pets stay safe, warm, and healthy throughout the storm. Winter weather may be unpredictable, but keeping pets protected is always within your control.
